Professor T.H.B Symons

Professor T.H.B. Symons, who died on New Year’s Day, aged 91, made his mark in an extraordinary number of ways both in Canada and around the world. At Broadview, our debt to him was considerable; we were fortunate to have him as a member of our Board of Directors for over 30 years. In our company’s early days as a small, struggling publisher, having the founding president of Trent University on the board made a tremendous difference in giving us credibility as an organization. And in the years since, Tom has continued to play an active role; he was a strong and consistent voice pushing us to be more international in our approach, while never forgetting our Canadian roots. And, perhaps more than any other member of the board, he always spoke up not only with questions or concerns but also with praise, acknowledging the contributions that our staff and our authors were making. His contribution to Broadview’s development into an academic publisher with a world-wide reputation—and his unfailing courtesy and good humour—will not be forgotten. A more detailed memorial may be found on the Trent University website.
