It is a pleasure to have the novels back in print, and Pickering’s appendices wonderfully contextualize these works for the twenty-first century reader. I especially appreciate the inclusion of stories by black African women writers Mabel Dove Danquah and Efua Sutherland, well-chosen historical documents from the 1920s and the 1940s, and the 1952 African Affairs report on Southern Rhodesia. I consider this volume a must read.”
